1. Consult your engineer

First of all before embarking on the journey to begin a roof top garden you need to ensure if your roof can support one. You need to be very sure with the amount of weight your roof can hold. Consult your engineer for the same and accordingly design your garden area. After that look out if proper sunlight will be available for plants or not. Also look out for water source. You must most certainly check out that there shouldn't be any leakage related issues with the roof.

2. Type of plants

Next is you have to zero down on type of plants that you wish to grow in your garden. You will have to select if you wish to grow them on floor, in raised beds or in pot containers or a combination of these and accordingly figure out the area.
You may grow small trees, evergreen shrubs or vines. In less sunny spot you can grow camellias and rhododendrons, Japanese maples and honeysuckles, sweet autumn clematis. In full sun you can grow the lemon tree, oleanders, virbunum or other fruits like pomegranates, apples, figs etc.
Succulents and perennials like aloe vera and various cacti are very easy to grow and are low in maintenance. Among other flowering plants you can choose from hibiscus, petunia, daylily, tulips, rose, bouganvellia, jasmine etc.
Many people prefer to grow edible plants like eggplant, ladyfinger, strawberries, bottleguard in their roof top garden. So, the choice is entirely up to you to decide the quality and quantity of plants you wish to grow.

3. Select right medium

After selection of plants, next very important step is to choose the correct medium for your plants to grow. The correct mixture of compost and manure is essential for plants as this is the source from where they get nutrients. So spend some time in figuring out the correct fertilizer for your garden and accordingly use one. Also, choose the correct pot size for potted plants.

4. Care

Your garden is your little baby and you need to nurture it. You need to dedicate some time of your day to gardening chores. Even if you give an hour a day to watering, pruning, grovelling, fertilizing it would do the needful. I am sure your garden would be one of the prettiest. I like to water my plants daily as if it sets a connection between me and my plants. Time I spend gardening is like a healing therapy session for me and I just love it.

5. Enjoy the luxury

Once you have mastered the above mentioned steps your roof top garden is ready to rock. You have a very beautiful garden to flaunt to your neighbors.
