Vintage Style or Retro Decor

How to do vintage home decor

Vintage style usually refers to the style of a previous era. I personally like this style because it transports you to a completely different yet soulful world. It carries you back to your grandma's memory. This distinctive style is characterised by minimal, curvy shapes and muted colors. It can add fun touch to any design. It involves those pastel shades of white, antique decors featuring gramophones, old typewriters, bone china with floral prints, rustic doors, curvy detailing across furnitures and anything and everything that makes you remember for your grandma's days.

This decor style has always been popular and is not just restricted to homes. Many commercial outlets like cafes, restaurants, shoppes etc adopt vintage styling for their interiors.

We have already discussed minimalism and maximalism in previous posts. So now we head on to decorating our home with this old-fashioned yet bold look.

1. Vintage furniture

Having a vintage furniture can speak volumes about your decor theme. Its unique and one of a kind! Many people inherit great furnitures from their forefathers and they generally strike a chord with such antique things. You can have a centre table or a sofa set which flaunts your favourite decor style. This central piece would do justice to the decor theme even if you miss oyt other detailing.

2. Fabric

The second important thing is upholstery. Pastel shades generally do well but you can choose any colour which goes with the theme. Floral curtains is a good choice. Sofa covers can be any shade of off white which is my personal favourite for this decor. You can also have table runners with an old fabric look.

3. Vintage bed

Yes, this is a must have. Your bed room would automatically give a vintage feel if you have a correct bed in the centre. A bed with four pillars and net upholstery is the signature theme for this.

3. The correct wall art

Its very important to have beautiful walls in your home as they create the necessary ambience for you. For our decor theme you can have your old snaps framed and hang them to your wall. Choose pictures with greyscale tone as it would enhance the vintage art depicted there. You may also use sepia version in your pictures.

4. Accessories

After all this comes detailing. You can accessories your home with a whole plethora of things available in online shopping or otherwise. There are old cassettes, tape recorders, VCRs, ash-trays, armchair, light brackets, lamps, metal candle stands, chandelier which can be used as decor items.

Apart from all this you can even customise your bathrooms to give you that nostalgic feeling everytime you enter it. You can add mirrors or an old fashioned dressing with multiple drawers to add to the theme.

Hence, keeping all the above points in mind you can give your home the much sought after vintage look and the drama associated with a retro interior design.
